This was the original kitchen built for the Mirabal home in Conuco. A modern kitchen was later added to the house and this old kitchen was turned into a storage shed. Separate kitchens were built in the backyards of homes as a fire safety measure. This building approach is still practice in many rural areas in the Dominican Republic, more out of tradition and nostalgia then practicality.
